The prayer of Jesus (iii), John 17:20-26

10th Apr 2019

20 “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.25 “Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (NRSV)

One

Imagine for a moment
All God’s people united
Living with every fibre of their being
for the same cause.
What could that cause be?
That would not create tension and division
Factions and splits.
What could possibly command
Such undivided attention
Undiluted Loyalty
Only One
That all God’s People
You and I
Should Love the Lord our God
With every breath of our lives
Unconstrained
Unashamed
Living with and for
The One who has loved us with an everlasting love
Placing our desires,
Internal passions and fires
At the feet of Him
Who laid every claim aside
To overcome the divide
To be
With
you.
Could that ever be,
To live first
for the God of all eternity
When can I start
Where do I sign

Here’s the challenge
It begins with His one new command
To Love as He has loved you
Laying everything down
For even your enemies
As if they were your sisters
Driven by love
Not by passion and feelings
But the hard choice of seeking
the best
For the other
The outcast
The one that doesn’t belong.
Seeking in them
The One that will be in you
When your love for Him is true

Then the world will not be able to miss
The taste in you
Of eternal bliss
Peace that reigns
Because God’s people
Are unafraid
To love against every odds
To reject all the other
False gods
To embrace the thorns
Of self sacrifice
So that those who are lost
Can discover life
The life that exhales
From the one united body
Which bows the knee
To the one
glorious
Son.
