Much is made these days of ‘generational differences’ in society, and Christian books, mission strategies and growth plans are often shaped around perceived distinctions between ‘Boomers’, ‘Xers’, ‘Millennials’ and ‘Generation Z’. The need to attract young people to faith is more intense than ever, yet we live in an ageing society. David Hilborn has been researching and writing in this area for two decades, and in this lecture he will update the findings of his and Matt Bird’s influential book God and the Generations: Youth, Age and the Church Today (Paternoster). Where do generational categories come from? What should we make of them theologically? How important are they compared to distinctions like race, class, gender and economic status? And how should we do church and mission practically in relation to them? These and other aspects of generations will be explored in this talk, with lots of opportunity for questions and discussion.
